HOW TO TELL YOUR FAMILY THAT YOU'VE DECIDED TO ELOPE

Deciding to elope is no longer the snap decision of the last century, today its typically a much more thought-out decision.  Telling your family that you’ve decided to elope can be one of the hardest parts about that decision. We’ve put together a  few tips for how to approach this potentially difficult conversation:

  1. Explain your reasons for eloping: It's important to be honest and open with your family about why you've chosen to elope. Maybe you want a more intimate and low-stress wedding, or perhaps you want to save money and spend it on a dream honeymoon instead. Whatever your reasons - share them with your family!

  2. Assure your family that they are still important to you: It's natural for your family to feel hurt or left out if you decide to elope, so it's important to reassure them that they are still important to you and that your decision to elope doesn't change your love and appreciation for them. A great time to remind them that this is your day, and you want it to be a true reflection of who you are as individuals and as a couple. Its about you, not them!

  3. Offer alternatives for them to be involved: Consider offering your family ways to be involved in your elopement, such as having a small reception or celebration after the fact. Or our personal favorite way to involve your family in your elopement - have them write you letters that you can open and read on your elopement day.  This can help them feel included and ensure that your elopement doesn't completely replace the traditional wedding experience.

  4. Be prepared for their reactions: It's important to remember that everyone reacts differently to news, and it's possible that your family may have a range of emotions about your decision to elope. Be prepared to hear them out - really listen to their thoughts and feelings, and try to be understanding of their perspective.

  5. Stick to your decision: Ultimately, the decision to elope is you and your partner's, and it's important to stand firm in your decision. Don't let the opinions of others sway you if eloping is what you truly want. Remember, this is YOUR WEDDING and you should do EXACTLY what you want!

Remember to be open and honest, and try to find ways to include your loved ones in your special day to soften the blow.
